Pardon the pun but we thought we would give you the lowdown on our 3 most favourite mobile applications you can use before and during your holiday this winter!
Snowbound– Snowbound is the perfect app to keep an eye on the resort you are heading to this winter! It’s free and incredibly simple to use! All you have to do is search your resort, pop in your dates and you will received updates or ‘dump alerts’ when your chosen destination receives some of the white stuff we so love! There are even direct links to the webcams on the bottom. Really easy to use and a great way of counting down the days and counting up the snow!! Snowbound is available for free for Android and IOS devices so have a little look. It’s simple but really fun and if you’re resort isn’t on there, just send them an email and they’ll add it just for you!
SkiTracks – if you haven’t come across Ski Tracks before it’s a great way of clocking your mileage, ascents, descents and much more whilst you are on holiday! If you’re a numbers geek then this is the one for you! Whilst we don’t condone riding super fast you can also see your speed on the app which is actually quite exciting and sometimes a little daunting! Just don’t get lulled into competing with your friends for the fastest home run! The app runs using GPS so you will need the stars to be aligned for you but it’s generally very reliable! It’s available for a small charge (69p) for Android and IOS devices and turns you into a statistical fool!!
Ullr’s Mobile Avalanche Safety Guide (MAST) – As they tell you on their website they are the world’s first digital snow and avalanche field notebook. The makers of the app have combined established principles of snow science with the camera, GPS, inclinometer, compass and data communication capabilities on your phone to enable you to download the latest avalanche forecasts from your local centre, record your field observations with no wi fi or mobile signal. You can record the weather, the snow pack details and stability test results and receive alerts if those observations are outside the safe ranges.
You can also transmit this information to share with others and receive educational information to keep you on top of your game. Whilst the app sounds fantastic, remember their is no sure fire way of guaranteeing your safety off and sometimes on piste so be safe out there and have fun! The app is available for android and IOS devices and costs £6.99. If you are keen on your back country skiing or snowboarding then this application is something to add to your safety equipment!
If you are coming to see us in Morzine this winter then be sure to show us any apps you think are worth knowing about! We might even get chance to see them in action on the mountain with you!
